The Coronavirus has impacted many people across the world, and will continue to change the way we live our lives over the next couple of months. As we approach graduation season many college students face a new problem. If graduating college and trying to find your dream job wasn’t already challenging, here comes the Coronavirus.
Chances are you won’t be doing face to face interviews anytime soon, get ready to download zoom, lifesize, or any other video chat service. Many companies are moving to phone or video conferences to conduct interviews, which come with their own pros and cons. Phone interviews give you the opportunity to take notes but you don’t get to pick up on facial expressions or any other cues that you usually would. Video conferencing is great, just be sure to have a strong internet connection, professional background and attire, no one likes a laggy connection or wants to see your roommate walking around in their underwear.
In order to stand out in this COVID-19 job market you will need to be aggressive on social media, that means getting in contact with hiring managers and other stakeholders. My favorite place to go is LinkedIn. You have millions of professionals and companies at your fingertips. Try to connect with them to learn more about them and their role. In addition to that, tap into your current network of professors, friends, and family. These are the people that know you best and can speak to your skills and accomplishments.
Navigating the job market under these circumstances will definitely not be easy. Remember tough times don’t last, tough people do. Stay dedicated and continue to move past hurdles that stand in your way.
