Hi Everyone,
My name is Destiny. I'm a Spring 2020 graduate nurse (BSN). Despite all of the chaos going on in the world right now, I'm determined to secure a position as a registered nurse this summer. So far I've had my resume revised by The Hiring Hub. This service has helped me secure an interview with two of my top hospitals! Yay! The Hiring Hub is the real MVP! But still, this entire job hunting process can be daunting. So many college seniors get overwhelmed with the pressure to complete this task in their last semester. (What really makes our anxiety levels rise is thinking of the all student loans we have to pay back. But that's another convo....lol)
Why is it so hard for some college graduates to find a job right away? Do internships really play in big role in securing a position? Does GPA matter or is it all networking? Did you secure the position before or after graduation?
Feel free to share any tips for securing that first job after graduating from college.
Hi Destiny! I believe it’s hard for some graduates to find a job right away because of the location of the job and how competitive the nursing profession can be or sometimes I feel as if companies don’t want to risk spending money on a new grad just for them to find nursing isn’t for them and they leave. But I wouldn’t let any of that discourage anyone from pursuing their dreams and applying for their dream job because you just never know. I feel that internships look good to employers because it shows that you have more hands on experience than the average grad who hasn’t and I believe GPA does matter because it shows that you have the book knowledge down because I mean let’s face it, 90% of the hands on portion will be taught on the floor. I secured my position before graduating and it just so happen to be the only job (of many) I got a call back from for an interview & job offer. Things may get tough but never give up! Best of luck.
@Destiny Smith I think that internships 100% matter;however, for someone in nursing I think it's important to leverage clinical experiences in the hospitals. Use those experiences to strengthen your resume. In terms of GPA, ultimately it may not matter if you have experiences that are relevant to your position but keep in mind it could be harder to get your foot in the door with a lower GPA.
Hey Denise. I believe it can be challenging for people to land a job right after undergrad. Sometimes it‘s just human nature to expect things like this to just happen instantly. I believe the key to society today are internships. From my experiences I believe these companies are looking for hands on experience not just theory or what we may learn in class. Don’t get me wrong I believe it may help at the end of the day but they want to know what can you do and what are your experiences with what they may be looking for. GPA does not matter that much lol. Having a 3.0 is good enough for someone to land a solid internship but for a job, it does not matter. Also, yes I did secure a job after graduation I believe because I had interned at 3 different companies prior to landing my first job (which was my last and current internship at the time).
